Matheus was born in Minas Gerais, Brazil, where he spent his early childhood surrounded by a lush tropic/sub-tropic landscape. Most of his days were spent outdoors in the nearby mountains and pastures of his hometown. From an early age, he felt a strong cultural connection to his community and was observant of how landscapes brought people together.
At the age of nine, Matheus came to the US with his family where he lived in multiple towns across New England. He attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he received a Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning degree and was selected as the 2021 LAF Olmsted Scholar. Prior to joining RJI, Matheus worked several design-build jobs and has a trade background as an electrician and a masonry worker.
Music has always played an important role in Matheus’s life. It allowed him to connect with others and even helped him learn English. While not at the studio, Matheus spends his time serving as the creative director for a Miami-based record label and media company. He also explores his passion for the arts through photography and graphic design.
The belief that landscapes have the ability to bring people together by speaking for the land and the communities that they serve is ultimately the driving factor behind his work.
