Dar Moosha is a 2.6-acre single family residence on a beachfront double lot located in Lyford Cay, a private gated community on the western tip of New Providence Island in The Bahamas. The project transformed a plain estate with no landscaping or architectural character into what is now a home featuring minimalist architecture and a maximalist garden design.
Guided by the client’s vision of creating a lush tropical retreat with spaces for gathering, recreation, and artful living, the site was transformed into a sanctuary that feels like it has always been there. The layout of the property was designed to frame views and enhance connectivity while maintaining a sense of intimacy and privacy. At the heart of the compound, the main house overlooks the ocean. Beside it is a tranquil pool that anchors the space.
The planting design for this project was a collaborative process shaped by the clients’ preferences. The clients accompanied landscape architects to local nursery visits in South Florida. Together they picked plants to incorporate into the garden, creating a lush landscape. Native plants create a strong, sustainable base that thrives in the coastal environment. Tropical plants, with their bold leaves and colorful flowers, add texture and beauty to the site. The landscape feels like a mini-botanical garden that supports biodiversity. Plants are carefully placed to thrive in the lower elevation and blend naturally with the architecture.
Landscape architects designed hardscapes that combine function and beauty. Vehicular areas blend naturally with pedestrian spaces, featuring steppingstone paths, Coralina stone driveways, and well-planned walkways. Wide lawns draw the eye to the ocean, creating a sense of space and openness. Pathways bordered by lush plants lead visitors to explore art pieces and cozy garden spots.
This garden reflects the client’s love for art and an active, healthy lifestyle, so a pickleball court was thoughtfully integrated into the site plan.
The owner’s refined taste in art is showcased through a carefully curated sculpture collection throughout the garden. This project celebrates the essence of tropical coastal living, seamlessly blending architecture and nature to create a sanctuary where art, recreation, and the natural environment harmonize. Each element of this garden was thoughtfully designed to inspire a sense of wonder and connection, ensuring the site will be a treasured retreat for generations.
